Capital District Municipalities

Over the years, the Region's 79 municipalities have grown from a series of relatively independent settlements into a vibrant, interdependent urban metropolis. Although the Region focuses on the State Capital, Albany, it is really a metropolitan area of four central cities (Albany, Schenectady, Troy, and Saratoga Springs) surrounded by suburban and rural communities.

Of the three-quarters of a million people living in the Region, the majority reside within the Hudson and Mohawk river valleys and the plains bordered by the Adirondack, Taconic, and Helderberg mountain ranges and plateaus. Residents enjoy high quality air and water resources, open space and recreational opportunities, a convenient transportation network, and excellent educational and cultural facilities. Their livelihood depends heavily on employment opportunities in government, manufacturing, wholesaling, retailing, and services.

In addition to the core four-county area served by the Capital District Regional Planning Commission, the Region's jurisdiction also includes the nine-county Upper Hudson Region for aviation planning and an eight-county Region for Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) administration.

Capital District Minor Civil Divisions

  • Town populations include the populations of the Villages within their political jurisdictions. Also, parts of the Village of Nassau are included in the towns of Nassau and Schodack, Rensselaer County; parts of the Village of Valley Falls are included in the towns of Pittstown and Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County; and parts of the Village of Ballston Spa are included in the towns of Ballston and Milton, Saratoga County.
